Kazuo Ishiguro' s novel The Remains of the Day is a reminiscent tale of Stevens,a British butler who dedicates his lifetime to serving the owner of Dalington Hall. It excavates the contradictions between historical development and personal fate, and reveals three cultural dilemmas in Britain in the post-World War II era when Britain declined in its power and influence, namely, the hypocritical nostalgia of the England myth, the anachronistic Victorian virtues, and the otherness of British culture caused by the diverse cultures and new world order.
