This paper investigates the impact of China's National Trunk Highway System on export. To address endogeneity concerns, we calculate the least-cost network connecting all the targeted cities based on geographic characteristics. The estimation results suggest that counties that were connected to the highways and that were close to the highways experienced more rapid export growth during 1998-2008. In addition, if the counties' trade costs to seaports declined more, then their exports grew faster. These effects are more significant for counties exporting goods with higher weight-value ratio, and are less significant for counties with more rugged terrains.
