《长日留痕》是日裔英国作家石黑一雄的小说,在文学伦理学批评理论的观照下,文章分析了史蒂文斯的伦理身份及不同场合下的伦理选择。史蒂文斯的管家身份与他的职业伦理互为因果,对管家身份的固守和对职业伦理的死守使他失却了亲情和爱情。史蒂文斯伦理身份的复杂性体现出其内心的困惑与矛盾,也展露出其人性的禁锢与封闭,这揭示了他悲剧性一生的原因。
The Remains of the Day,a fiction by Japanese-born British author Kazuo Ishiguro,is told in the first-person of an English butler named Stevens in Darlington Hall about his retrospect of his early life when he travels driving to the West Country of England. This paper aims to probe into the Stevens＇ ethical identity and his ethical choices from the perspective of Ethical Literary Criticism. Steven＇s firm insistence on his identity as a butler and strong adherence to his professional ethics make him lose family affections and love. The complexity of Stevens ＇ identity reveals his confrontation, his confusion, and his e imprisonment of humanity,disclosing the factors of his tragic life.
