Objective:To evaluate the therapeutic mechanism and effects of Salvias Miltiorrhizae and β-Aescinom Natricum on acute lung damage following thermal injury Methods:All the rats except those in the sham injury group were inflicted with 30% total body surface area(TBSA)third degree burns.Forty five rats were involved in this study. They were divided into five groups:sham injury group(n=9),saline group(n=9),Salviae Miltiorrhizae group(n=9),β-Aescinom Natricum group (n=9)and combination group(n=9).The rats were sacrificed 24 hours after injury. The status of leucocyte sdhesiveness/aggregation(LAA)in peripheral blood, and myeloperoxidase(MPO),malondialdehyde(NDA),superoxide dismutase(SOD)contents in lung tissue were determined. Results:A significant increase in blood LAA,tissue MPO,and MDA contents was found in Salviae Miltiorrhizae group,β-Aescinom Natricum group and combination group as compared with those in saline group, and those in the combination group were the lowest among the three groups.A significant decline in tissue SOD contents were found in Salviae Miltiorrhizae group,β-Aescinom Natricum group and combination group as compared with those in saline group, and those in the combination group were higher than the other two groups.Blood LAA was positively correlated with tissue MPO content. Conclusion:Both Salviae Miltiorrhiazae and β-Aescinom Natricum can decrease adhesiveness and aggregation of PMNs in lung tissue, inhibit oxygen free radical formation and increase the protective effect of SOD.The combination of the two drugs has protective effects on acute lung damage following thermal injury.
