Professor Stephen Cowley from Department of Language and Communication in University of Southern Denmark, Odense, is the pioneer of Distributed Language Movement and Bio-ecological Awareness. This movement holds that linguists should strive for the distributed view of language and cognition, that is, acknowledgement of language, cognition, nature, ecology and all the living beings on the planet. It highly rejects the Saussurean perspective of language faculty, that is, the separation of language from ecology. This movement started a decade ago, and has gone through ten years of development. However, scant attention has been paid to this movement in the Chinese academia.Such key terms as first-order activity, second-order cultural construct and principle of non-localizability as well as the core questions of language, cognition and ecology involved in the movement indicate great values for the flourishing Chinese ecolinguistics and cognitive science. More importantly, bio-ecological awareness, first developed by Stephen, offers the new perspective for dealing with such typical issues in ecological crisis as environmental degradation. Therefore, this movement deserves the widespread promotion and application, in combination with practical issues in the Chinese context.I held an interview with Stephen Cowley during my visit to University of Southern Denmark in November, 2016, with the editorial authorization from Journal of Poyang Lake and personal one from Stephen. This interview was involved in two sections:(1)the rise and early development of the movement, including the basic views of language, cognition and philosophy in the movement, criticism of such influential scholars as Roy Harris and Nigel Love to traditional view of language faculty in post-Saussurean linguistics, and some key historical figures in the history of the movement;(2)the state of art of the movement and its important implications for the future horizons of global ecolinguistics and cognitive science, concerning such key terms as bio-ecological awareness in the movement.
