Antrodia cinnamomea, also known as Taiwanofungus camphoratus, is a medicinal fungus endemic to Taiwan; its characteristics are greatly different from the Ganoderma lucidum. A. cinnamomea has a long history of use in Taiwan; at about 200 years ago it was eaten by only a handful of people or the indigenous people living in the mountainous areas. At about 1985, it was known to the general public and began to receive attention on its characteristics and bioactive compound functions. Wild A. cinnamomea selectively parasitizes in the inner wall of the hollow trunk or on the moist surface of the dead trunk of Cinnamomum kanehirai, an endemic species that grows in the forest areas at the altitude of 600-2000 m, and it has not been reported to grow in other parts of the world. A. cinnamornea is rich in diverse bioactive compounds. In recent years, many Taiwan Residents scholars have conducted detailed insight studies on the effectiveness of A. cinnamomea in anti-cancer, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and other activities. Up to 31 December 2014, a total of about 270 papers on A. cinnarnomea has been published in the international journals. Because wild A. cinnamornea is very scarce and expensive, and insufficient to fulfill the needs of the market, hence many Taiwan Residents biotechnology companies have actively developed various cultivation methods, including using C. kanehirai log culture, other wood species log culture, solid-state culture, submerged liquid culture and petri dish culture for its production, as well processing these A. cinnarnomea raw materials into various types of products in catering to the needs of the huge business market opportunities.
