In recent years as the situation in the South China Sea has continued to escalate, the question of how to define China's national interests in the South China Sea has become increasingly important.A state's identity is essentially its understanding of 'Who am I'as a state.Identity influences the strategic decisions of state actors, and in the case of the South China Sea,understanding of its interests. At present, there are two understandings of China's identity:one of'an ordinary state'another of a'major power'.The mutual existence of these two different understandings result in different sets of understandings within China of its interests in the South China Sea.At the same time, the international community tends towards reading China's strategic objectives in the South China Sea through the prism of China as a rising state. In the future, once a Chinese identity as a rising power becomes dominant in China,China will begin to see a major shift in its policy towards the South China Sea.
