Stephen Crane used to be classified as a representative writer of American naturalism, and the interpretation of his well- celebrated short story The Open Boat is mainly confined to the analysis on the naturalistic ideology and writing skills in it. However, Stephen conveys richer implication than mere naturalism in the story. By putting the story into a larger historical context of American Puritanism, this thesis intends to make a breakthrough from the confinement of the perspective of naturalism and probe into the mythological archetype in the story and its underlying theme of redemption.
