摘要
中国传统有机宇宙论在晚清遭遇基督教自然神学的挑战。而天演论作为晚清时代最先进、最有影响的科学宇宙论,与传统中国的有机宇宙论高度一致。两者都认为宇宙是自动生成的,而不是被一个超越的上帝创造的;两者都坚持宇宙万物的发展动力和规则来自宇宙自身而非外部事物。这使天演论能够被中国知识分子用来支持传统有机宇宙论,并对抗基督教自然神学中的神创宇宙论和机械宇宙论。这是天演论迅速风靡知识界并产生深远影响的一个内在原因。
Traditional Chinese organic cosmology was challenged by Christian natural theology in the late Qing dynasty (1616- 1912), whereas the theory of evolution as the most advanced and most influential scientific cosmology in the late Qing era was highly consistent with traditional Chinese organic cosmology. Both of them consider the cosmos as automatically genera- ted rather than created by a transcendent God, and both of them contend that the motive force and rule of the development of the cosmos come from the cosmos itself rather than external things and events. This helps Chinese intellectuals make use of the theory of evolution in order to bolster traditional organic cosmology and oppose the creationism and mechanical cosmology conceived in Christian natural theology. This is the immanent cause for the immediate fashion and far-reaching influence of the Evolution and Ethics among Chinese intellectuals.
