The beginning of these Chinese ceramics housed in the Royal Collection of the UK could be traced back to 500 years ago. These collections are majorly consisted of traded ceramics and tribute porcelains. Among them, a group of the finest treasures is the diplomatic gifts that separately sent from the Emperor Qianlong to the King George III and from the Empress Dowager Cixi to the Queen Victoria. As an initial study on this theme, this paper attempts to divide this long history into five periods according to the historical changes of diplomacy and trade between China and the UK. To some extent, these five periods might be able to indicate the Qing dynastic decadence from the 18th to 19th centuries.
