摘要
纽曼的大学理想与其担任爱尔兰天主教大学首任校长的办学实践之间存在着巨大的反差:无论这所大学还是作为校长的纽曼,其合法性频遭质疑;办学目标难以在各方力量间达成共识,导致生源不足,资金短缺,难以为继;作为校长,纽曼在人事安排、教师选聘、学生管理等方面无法有效推行其办学理念。除了时代与环境因素外,纽曼的个性缺陷、人际关系协调能力和行政经验不足也是导致这位理想主义者陷入困局的重要原因。
There's a huge gap between Newman's university ideal and its reality in the following aspects:firstly,this university and Newman as its Rector was not recognized among the Irish bishops;secondly,the educational goal could not reach a consensus between all the parties,resulting in a lack of students and funding and the ultimate failure of the university;thirdly,in the internal operation,Newman shouldered a lot of responsibility yet without real power to recruit suitable teachers and manage students,etc.Apart from the historical,institutional and environmental reasons,another important one leading to this idealist's reality dilemma was Newman's personality flaw and his lack of interpersonal skills and sophisticated administrative experience.
