An important chiral building block, R-(+)-butanetriol, was synthesized from the natural L-tartaric acid via four steps reactions, including the preparation and reduction of cyclic sulfate, in 60% overall yield. In addition, an effective purification method for synthesizing poly-hydroxyls compounds was described.
