Objective To appraise the variations and significance of waist and thigh circumferences and their ratios between siblings of first degree relatives of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) families with normal glucose tolerance and members of non-DM families. Methods Two groups formed were: (1) Normal glucose tolerance (NGT) group from siblings of first degree relatives of 406 families of type 2 diabetes and (2) control group with normal glucose tolerance from their spouses of non-DM families. The two groups were divided into male and female subgroups. Each male or female subgroup was further divided into six age sub-groups. The variations of waist/thigh circumferences and their ratios from the above different subgroups were evaluated. Results Thigh circumferences of NGT group were smaller than that of control group in two sub-groups . Significant deviations occurred in both waist circumferences and WTR of older age sub-groups bigger than younger age sub-groups in male and female subgroups from both NGT and control groups. The waist/thigh ratios in different age sub-groups of NGT group were greater than that in different age sub-groups of control group. All P values were 0.0001.Conclusion Individuals with normal glucose tolerance in siblings of first degree relatives of type 2 DM were different from those having normal glucose tolerance as a general. One can see the tendency of abnormalities of other metabolic changes before the appearance of glucose metabolic abnormalities.
