Objective To evaluate stability of thoroclumbar burst fractures after anterior or posterior instruments fixation. Methods The three - dimensional motion were tested on T12 - L1 and L1- L2 segments of 7 fresh adult thoroclumbar specimens before and after the specimens were impacted to burst fractures. Steffee plate, Kaneda and Harrington rod were used to fix the fractured spine and three - dimensional motion were tested after each fixation seperately. Results The three instruments can restore the flexion - extension movements of fractured specimens as well as normal ones, but can only reduce part of the excess rotation motion of the injuried specimens. Conclusion Steffee plate is the best instrument among the three ones, which can provide good stability, follows the Kaneda.
