Objective To investigate human Parvovirus (HPV) B19 infection and its effect in pathologic jaundice of newborn infants. Methods 130 serum specimens from neonatal pathologic jaundice were tested B19 DNA with nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and 80 healthy newborns served as control group. Results B19 DNA positive rate was 34 6% (45/130) in all patients, compared to 8 8% in control group (P<0 001).In 45 cases B19 positive neonatal patients, there was 25 newborn hemolytic diseases,6 cephalhematoma and infectious diseases, which characterized by anemia, hemorrhage, fever, rash, even temporary aplastic crisis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in a few case.Conclusin ①HPV B19 infection is the important reason for pathologic jaundice in newborn infants.②B19 is closely correlated with neonatal pathologic jaundice and has some effect on its clinical characteristics.
