This paper mainly explores the implied meaning of Waiting for Godot from the prospect of time, which in the play not only pushes on the action, but also reflects a sense of loss and perplexity prevalent in the Western World after the Second World War. The way that time is represented embodies the nothingness of life. In order to escape from the truth, the protagonists choose to forget the past, whereas what follows is only the death of spirit. By the symbol of time, this drama reveals the splitting pain that a person suffers between the physical death and spiritual death that he seems doomed to face in the modern life, and urges for the return of meaningful thoughts and life on the wasteland of oblivion.
