Objective: To compare the responses of cardiovascular and hormonal medicine to isotonic and resistance exercises and to explore the possibility of using heart rates as an index of exercise intensity for resistance exercises. Method:Isotonic and alternant resistance exercises were carried out in eight health men with target heart rates and equal exercise times. Both exercises-induced changes in heart rate, blood pressure and catecholamines were observed. Result: Systolic blood pressures (SBP) and rate pressure product (RPP) significantly increased after both kinds of exercises. Pulse pressure (PP) was augmented significantly in isotonic exercise, but mean arterial pressure (MAP) rose remarkably and maximal voluntary constractions (MVC%) was correlated directly with the heart rates in resistance exercise. The increase in plasma noradrenaline and dopamine induced by exercise were more remarkable in resistance exercise than in isotonic exercise. Little changes in plasma adrenaline were observed after both exercises. Conclusion: Heart rate as usually an index of intensity in isotonic exercise and is equal to alternant resistance exercise. The different sorts and intensity of exercise may directly influence secreting degrees of plasma catecholamines.
