Donepezil hydrochloride, a selective acetylcholinesterase (AchE) inhibitor, is a novel compound that affects the brain cholinergic system through its potent inhibitory activity on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and that is being developed to treat Alzheimer s disease. The inhibitory action is reversible and noncompetitive. Donepezil hydrochloride alleviated the impairment of memory acquisition caused by the lesion of the medial septum in rats in the water maze test.
