The same conjunction may introduce different kinds of subordinate clauses. If clause is usually treated as adverbial clause of condition in most of grammar and textbooks. Discussed here are several kinds of adverbial clauses introduced by the conjunction 'if', and these clauses are too analysed and summarized according to their five functions: supposition, condition, time, concession and cause, including some derivative uses of the word 'if'. Meamwhile the paper also describes some ways to comprehend and translate these adverbial clauses.
