This paper introduces improvement of design level for port and waterway engineering in the recent twenty years through applying CAD technique from the aspects as follows: CAD hardware construction,CAD application software development,strengthening leadership and policy guarantee,training a highly qualified CAD application and development team,etc. It also investigates and discusses the development trend ahead of CAD technique for port and waterway engineering
