A model of heat transfer through low-E windows is developed. The two most important performance parameters-overall heat transfer coefficient (U value) and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) are calculated and analyzed. The factors that influence the two parameters of low E windows are discussed and the mechanism of why low-E windows can save building energy is discussed. It also gives an example of the simulation of the impact of low-E windows on air conditioning and heating energy cost in four typical climates in China. Based on the results of the simulation, the most eligible class of low-E windows is proposed for each climate for the best energy saving effect.
