Traditionally, libraries were measured primarily by their collection sizes. In the digital age, such a parameter of measurement is increasingly blurred due to the fact that libraries today are being transformed from isolated 'warehouses of collections' to networked 'gateways of information', from providing only the 'in-place' services to providing broad 'in-time' virtual information services. As the operating environment is changing rapidly, libraries will be increasingly judged by a different set of measurements in addition to size and volume count. This article explores this new set of measurements, centering on the following six core parameters: 1) quantity and quality of resources,2) connectedness and digitalization,3) diversity in services,4) global information access,5) facilitation of distance education and learning,6) staff quality.
