Claystone is one of the important candidate host rocks of the repository for high-level radioactive waste geological disposal. Geological prospecting has been conducted on the clay formation in Tamusu area, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which suggested that the clay formation in Tamusu area were formed in a stable sedimentary environment with widely extending horizontal stratum. Further studies on petrology and mineral characteristics by X-ray diffraction and SEM analysis indicated that the clays are mainly composed of kaolinite and illite with the politic texture and compact structure. The preliminary results of this study showed that the clay formation meets the requirements basically as the host rocks for high-level radioactive waste geological disposal.
