From very early times, the kingdoms ruling Korea began to imitate Chinese dynasties in establishing official astronomical institutes in charge of astrology and calendar-making. To meet the knowledge needs in these fields, Korean rulers tried very hard to learn and introduce astronomy from China. Generally, the Chinese government would see the issuance of Chinese calendar and eclipse predictions to the Korean king as a way to highlight China's position as the metropolitan state, while the Korean government would see the capability of making their own calendar as an indication of political independence. Therefore, the astronomical communication between the two countries always carried very heavy political meanings.
