The industrial production of β-lactam antibiotics is undergoing an intensive competition. Enzyme processes are much prospective due to its high efficiency, low cost, safety, non-contamination and steady production. According to the status of β-lactam antibiotics production, some strategies are proposed in this article on preparation and stabilization of enzymes, production of semi-antibiotics by using genetic engineering, side direction mutagenation and enzyme engineering for enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis and synthesis. Application of enzyme engineering will prompt the process of domestic enzyme production in β-lactam antibiotics.
