Objective To compare the clinical effect of silver amalgam, glass ionomer cement, and light-activated resin adhesive in filling class Ⅱ cavity, aiming at finding a dental material that can more fulfill the idea of minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry. Methods One hundred and forty-eight cases (171 tooth) of class II cavity were randomly divided into three groups: group I used silver amalgam to fill the cavity, group II used high tensioned glass ionomer cement, and group III used light-activated resin adhesive. Clinical restoration effect was assessed 5 years after the filing. Results The 5-year success rate was 71.4%,82.98%, and 94.64% for silver amalgam group, glass ionomer cement group, and light-activated resin adhesive group, respectively, and the difference was of statistical significance (P<0.05). Conclusion The application of light-activated resin adhesive in the filling of class Ⅱ cavity can achieve ideal prognosis, and is more in accordance with the requirement of modern minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry.
