The virtual enterprise (VE) is an important enterprise mode for agile manufacturing which requires a CAPP system to provide many new characteristics to support the setup and operation of the virtual enterprise. This paper deals with the CAPP system for the VE. The structure of the group process planning system for the virtual enterprise (GPPS VE), which is composed of several agile computer aided process planning systems (ACAPPS) for an agile partner enterprise, is presented based on the analysis of the VE characteristics. The ACAPPS functional requirements are also addressed. Finally, the architecture of a three tiered application composed of a browser, a Web server and a database server is introduced. This kind of architecture enables ACAPPS to reconfigure and scale according to different process planning tasks.
