Located on Mt. Gushan west to Yecheng City, the capital of the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties, the Xiangtangs- han Grottoes had a close relationship with the two imperial families. The Buddha clothing depicted in these grottoes belong mainly to two categories, i.e. the shoulders coveting style and the underclothing resting upon the right elbow style, and can be divided into two phases. Phase I eorresponded roughly to the time from the Eastern Wei to the King Wenxuan Reign of Northern Qi periods ( ca. AD534--559) , when the first style prevailed as the main type. Phase II lasted from the Heqing Era to the fall of the Northern Qi Dy nasty (ca. AD562--577) , when the second style became prevalent. The second sub-type of the second style had something to do with the reformation of monastic garments initiated by Zhaoxuantong Fa Shang, a monk who was a national master in the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties.
