The history of Indians in Kenya can be traced to the 1st century, but only on small scale until the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. At that time, British colonists employed Indian labour force to build railroad in their east African colonies. During the colonial period, many Indians came to Kenya and formed the communities that were small but influential. At that time, Indians as a different race faced the dilemma: on one hand, some were involved in the struggles against British colonists even the independent movement for Kenya; on the other hand, most Indians accumulated a lot of property for themselves and it was blameworthy that they monopolized the markets and controlled the economic lifelines in Kenya. After the independence, Kenyan government restrained the economic as well as political influence of Indians. For different reasons, most Indians were away from Kenyan politics completely. Indians gradually became an ethnic characteristics of Indians hindered them as an ethnic society. minority in Kenya. However, some group truly integrated into the Kenyan
