OBJECTIVE To detect and identify the viruses causing respiratory tract infections in hospitalized children in Jiaxing area so as to understand the epidemic trend of respiratory tract infections and provide basis for the prevention and control of diseases. METHODS By means of the direct immunofluorescence assay, totally 8 species of viruses including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza A virus (FluA), influenza B virus (FluB), parainfluertza virus type 1,2,3 (PTV-1,2,3), adenovirus (ADV), and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) were detected in the sputum specimens obtained from 8594 children with respiratory diseases, aged between 1 day and 13 years, who were hospitalized from Jul 2008 to Jul 2011. RESULTS Of totally 8594 cases of patients, there were 2177 cases with the virus tested positive, the total positive rate was 25. 33%. The RSV ranked the first place among the species of viruses detected, which was tested positive in 143 (52.50%) cases; the detection rate of, the viruses was the highest in the patients aged between 3 and 6 years old, reaching up to 37.52%, the detection rate of the viruses was the highest (53.85%) in the patients with capillary bronchitis. CONCLUSION The viruses are the main pathogens causing respiratory tract infections in the children, the detection rate of the viruses is the highest in the children aged between 3 and 6 years, and the incidence rate of viral infections is the highest in the children with capillary bronchitis; the RSV is the predominant species.
