A merlion is an exotic animal assembled of lion head and fish body, which was born out of the leg- ends about merlions in Singapore. Through substantive and imaginative construction practice involved by such multi-subjects as politics, economy and culture as well as visualization and symbolization development, the mer- lion has become an urban sign and state image in Singapore, contributing to intensification of the national identi- ty. The successful transformation of merlions represents the organic linking between original form of culture and modern context. The inheritance, protection and development experience of the legends about Merlions can serve as advisable approach for vital protection of non-material cultural heritage.
