Symbol consumption in China has become a new fashion that has acquired the status of a quasi religion. It is worrisome because such a consumptive pattern has deep political, social, cultural and historical implications. In the contemporary age of cultural imperialism, the exploitation and control of "developing" countries by the "developed" nations is long since not direct colonization or product dumping, but the export of cultural values and ideas. Cultural hegemony uses a hidden form of cultural violence or coercion to promote a symbolic systemic control that take western ideas and values as universal value systems, as a way to dominate the less powerful nations. This paper seeks to lay bare the international and domestic component factors that form this symbolic fetishism in our transitional period. It hopes to mitigate the power of this universal consumptive ecstasy in the service of native cultures' survival in the face of such massive threat.
