Prepositions have been traditionally considered as a grammatical unit and functioned as an adverbial or a complement. As Chinese moves towards the disyllable, the pattern of "monosyllable verb + preposition zai(在)" has been established as a rhythm in pronunciation. This pattern plays the role of predicate in a sentence. Then we can expect that the pattern of "dysillablic verb + preposition 'zai'" can also systemically play the role of predicate. The preposition in this new pattern can still be considered as a preposition though not a typical one. I call this new pattern a prepositional verb phrase. Based on facts, I consider that the structure of verb + zai(在)" is a phrase which differs from the structure of predicate + complement". The new pattern unlike the structure of predicate + complement" always takes an object. According to the rules of spelling in Hanyu Pinyin(汉语拼音 ), a preposition is always seperated from the preceding verb. So I argue that preposition zai(在) should be seperated from the preceeding verb.
