What Do String Dualities Bring About for Philosophy of Science

摘要 对偶性是弦论框架内的核心概念之一,其主要立场是"理论形式或物理系统的描述似乎十分不同,却导致了相同的物理学"。这种奇特的对偶对称对科学哲学而言意义非凡,许多传统的哲学主张能以此获得拓展和深化。其中,它所涉及的主要哲学问题有:理论的非经验确证、亚决定性、理论间的同一与个性化、系统观、结构实在论、科学生成及其演化上的方法论。 Duality has played an enormously important role throughout the entire development of string theory. There are a number of different dualities within the framework of string theory such as T - duality, S - duality and the Ads/CFT correspondence. In string dualities, a key proposition is that we have theoretical formulations or descriptions of physical systems that seem very different but nevertheless result in the same physics. The proposition is very valuable for philosophy of science since it highlights several of our central issues. In my opinion, these issues have included mostly non - empirical confirmation, scientific underdetermination, theory identity and individuation, systems, structural realism, and methodology.
