As an important cultural heritage of the Western world, the commonplace book played a prominent role in history, especially during the Renaissance, when it functioned as a basic educational tool.Still a living presence, the commonplace book is manifold in both matter and form. The Renaissance manuscript commonplace books were influenced by print culture in format as well as in content. This essay introduces the tradition of manuscript and printed commonplace books in Renaissance England and traces the enormous impact exerted by Erasmus upon the commonplace-book tradition, with an eye to promoting the knowledge and study of commonplace books in China. The conclusion suggests potential directions for future research: commonplace book culture,a comparative study of the commonplace book and the Chinese leishu, and commonplace writing as applied to the practice of Chinese scholars such as Qian Zhongshu.
