The growing emphasis on wen (文,literary writing) in the Tang Dynasty gave rise to a new political culture that idealized the extraordinary power which was possessed by wen to transform and govern. Consequently, it led to the formation of a new political-social elite group that embodied the value of wen and generated their political and cultural capital through their distinguished service as imperial edict drafters. To understand this complex development, we must pay close attention to the career and image of the imperial edict drafters and their families, who were considered as the quintessential embodiment of such an ideal. Many newly discovered funerary stone-inscriptions of some eminent imperial edict drafters from the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties provide rich information that helps us to understand more concretely how their political and cultural identities were constructed and perceived, as well as how their families sustained political dominance. This article focuses on six imperial edict drafters and their families whose histories are preserved in their funerary stone-inscriptions. By investigating the composition of their funerary stone-inscriptions, this article outlines the formation of their cultural imagination that helped to cement the post of imperial edict drafters as the pinnacle success of literati-officials and the dominance of their families in the political and social landscape of the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties.
