Ever since Japan started again its direct foreign investment in the year of 1951, it developed quickly and Japan has already become the first largest direct foreign investor. New features of Japan's direct foreign investment in the 90s are: major fluctuations of investment sizes with a general down-slope tendency, the direction of investment has changed to the construction of an international production and distribution network, and modes of investment have changed from the previous establishment of local corporate businesses abroad to the current purchase and merging of foreign businesses, while the fashion of fund-raising has changed from home remittance to the direct fund-raising by the local corporate businesses or reinvestment with the surplus profit. The structure of the investing entities has displayed an all-directional and multi-level integrated layout, and its regional distribution is concentrated in the developed countries in America and Europe and developing countries in Asia.
