The trend of Kaschin-Beck disease in 3 types of endemic areas was studied in a 6-year surveillance. Results showed that the total prevalence rate appeared to be stable and slightly decline. The x-ray detecting rate of this disease decreased from 50.48% in 1982 to 33.07% in 1987, especially in the Loess Plateau. However, the disease in some areas were still serious. Case survey before and after the surveillance indicated that the patients' bony lesions had been improved and most of them could be spontaneously cured. Selenium contents in children's hair tended to increase, but those in grain and water remained almost the same. Mean while, there was no statistical relationship between the x-ray detecting rate of this disease and selenium in most of the investigated areas. Based on the results of the study, the authors consider that Kaschin-Beck disease in the investigated areas was stable and mild, also, the hypothesis that hyposelenium was the cause of Kaschin-Beck disease was quetionable.
