Objective To study the morphological changes of the epithelial cells from rats' ileum treated by microwave radiation and the effect of microwave radiation on the mast cell (MC). Methods SD-rats( ♂ , 20) were randomly divided into two groups: experiment group and control group. The rats of experiment group were given microwave radiation (900 MHz, 1.0 W, 214μm/cm^3) while those of con- trol group were conventionally bred. We observed the body weight and the morphological changes of the ileum mucosa, after which the ultrastructure of the specimens was observed under transmission electron microscopy, and mast cells distribution was detected with toluidine blue stain. Results Deduction in body weight was observed from the rats of experiment group when compared with the control group. In experiment group, the structure of the intestinal villi was disorderd; the villous structure disappeared; the intestinal gland was disorganized with the spacing widened in midgut gland and myometrial thinning. Intestinal mucosa cells were poorly circumscribed with the disappearance of nucleolus and the structure of cells like mitochondria and goblet cells were vacuolate. Fat was accumulated in the cytoplasm of small in testinal mucosal epithelial cells. The number of mast cells in the experimen group was larger than that in the control group (P〈0.05), lead to pathological changes in ileum. which was of clinical significance. the morphology of epithelial cells and Oonclusion Microwave radiation may significant increase of mast cells in rat
