Alkyne-terminated azobenzene compounds with dif- ferent length of spacer chains, which may used as monomers for click step-polymerization, were synthesized. In detail, an azobenzene raw material was prepared via the reaction of 4- aminobenzoic acid and phenol. Modification of the azobenzeneraw material with alkyne-terminated spacers derived from the reaction of 5-bromobutyne and different alkyl glycols gave the title compounds. The structure of the title compounds were confirmed by ~HNMR, ~3CNMR, FT-IR, elemental analysis and mass spectrum. The phase transition behavior was investi- gated by differential scanning calorimetry ( DSC ) and polar- ized optical microscopy. The results indicated that phase-tran- sition temperature and liquid crystalline nature could be mod- ulated via altering the length of spacers in these compounds.
