Objective :The aim of this study is to determine whether telephone follow - up nursing interventions after hospital discharge and after affect medi- cation compliance at three months in patients admitted for a first - ever occurrence of acute cerebral infarction. Methods: A total of 264 consecutive in - hos- pital patients with first -ever acute cerebral infarction were randomly divided into two groups. The patients in the control group (n = 131 ) received routine care at discharge. In addition, the patients in the experimental group (n = 133 ) received comprehensive health education at discharge and telephone inter- view two to three times a month after discharge. The information of medicine therapy of patients at discharge was collected. The rate of medication adherence with antiplatelet drugs and with prevention of risk factors, including hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetes, was evaluated through structured telephone interviews at 3 months follow - up. Results : Telephone follow - up and completed data of 212 eases ,including 104 cases in the control group, 108 cases of the experimental gronp. The rates of compliance with antiplatalet drugs, statins drugs and insulin in experimental group were higher than the control group ( P 〈 0.05 ). There were no differences in adherence rates of antihypertensive drugs between two groups (P 〉 0. 05 ). Conclusion :Telephone follow - up may play a role in secondary prevention of isehemic stroke, through health education and telephone followup, could improve medication compliance.
