Objective To compare the effect of suturing vs slit plasters for securing central venous catheters and to provide a reference for clinical nurses. Methods Central lines of sixty emergency patients were secured using either standard suture material (the suture group, 30 cases ) or slit plasters (the plaster group,30 cases). The time to secure a catheter, the rates of catheter dislodge and catheter-related blood stream infection (CRBSI) between the 2 groups were compared. Results The time to secure a catheter is sig- nificantly shorter in the plaster group than in the suture group (P〈0. 01) ;there were no significant differences in the rates of ca- theter dislodge and CRBSI between the 2 groups (P〉0.05 for both). The rate of catheter dislodge in the plaster group was higher, and rate of CRBSI was lower, than in the suture group. Conclusion Slit plasters could be used to time-efficiently secure central venous catheters, and decrease the occurance of CRBSI,which suits emergency patient. However, patients should be closely observed for prevention of catheter dislodge after application of this method.
