For much of last January large swathes of central and eastern China were enveloped in dense smog.In Beijing visibility fell to below 200 meters at one point.The air quality went from bad to worse this winter as emissions from industrial facilities,car exhaust,pollu-tion from construction sites,heightened demand for electricity and heating,natural fog and an absence of wind all coalesced into a"perfect pollution storm."
