Landscape rhythm has its deep root in the strategic implication oflandscapes as habitats for primitive men as collectors and hunters; this is the principle for the evaluation of landscape rhythm, which is illustrated with a case study carried out in a typical canyon landscape of Wanxiang Canyon in south Mt. Taihang. The tributary valleys distributed along the canyon, which are enclosed all around with precipices on which sit caves, indicate potential ideal territories and immediate living sites for primitives. The enclosed valleys are strung together through the canyons to form a string-of-beads spatial structure; within each of the enclosed valleys, an inverted-pogoda spatial structure is formed with a series of denuded terraces stepping upward. These two kinds of spatial structure can meet, to the greatest extent, man's desire for exploration and quick familarity with a new environment, which are of adaptive significance for primitives. These landscape structures are considered to be the aesthetic rhythm of natural landscape.
