Opera's greatest masters-Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi-were both born in 1813.Their lives and careers brought Romantic opera to its full flowering, yet their patlis and beliefs were very different. The former opened up a new era for German opera, touching upon philosophical themes;the latter inherited and carried forward the Italian operatic tradition, with music that captured human emotions. For this bicentennial year,we inaugurate a series of monthly articles on Wagner and Verdi, penned by music critic Ou Nan.
