The Fallacy of Value-Neutrality——A Review of DTS

摘要描写翻译研究的价值中立不过是表面上不做价值判断。实际上,研究者在描写对象、用于描写的中介概念和用于解释的范式等均隐含着选择性操作。选择与研究者的本土利益密切相关,进而影响其对被研究文本的解读,后者属于浸染着意识形态的社会话语。同一话语对不同研究者来说有不同价值,以致不同研究者对于同一话语的研究价值具有不同认知。研究者在强调某研究的研究价值时,实则前景化了该话语中所隐含的意识形态,以致研究具有问题化或强化该意识形态的潜在效应。 Descriptive Translation Studies （DTS） advocators claim that in DTS, researchers （should） keep aloof from value judgments and stay neutral. However, the so-called value-nentrality is just a verbal guise. In fact, researchers make selections in terms of texts/textual items to be described, intermediary concept used for description and paradigm applied for explanation. Selection is inextricably intertwined with the local interests of the researcher, which in turn shapes his/her interpretation of the selected texts that are themselves ideologically-loaded discourses. In that sense, the same discourse might be of different value to different researchers, who therefore have their own research significance conception towards the same discourse investigated. Asserting the social significance of examining certain discourse, the researcher actually foregrounds the ideology embedded in that discourse, with the potential effect of problematizing or reinforcing that ideology.
