In the past few decades, 'Shahtoosh ' shawls have be-come fashionable on the European and US markets, Sold in fashion and jewelry shops, they symbolize wealth and status. Expensive 'Shahtoosh' shawls can cost as much as US$40, 000, more expensive than their weight in gold. What is 'Shahtoosh' made of ? The answer to this question was discovered in 1992 by Doctor George Sharler, who began his investigation in 1985. He found that the raw material of the shawl is the down of Tibetan antelopes. In order to get the down, Tibetan antelopes must be killed, because they are hardly seen near human residences in the summer when their hair begins to change.Since the 1980s, the price of Tibetan antelope down has risen sharply. In 1996, the price was US$1,715 per kg on the Indian market. High profits have prompted illegal hunting. There are specialized smuggling groups that trans-port the down through Nepal or Pakistan to India, and then to Kashmir--almost all processed Tibetan antelope down in the world is processed here.According to statistics, there are 75,000 to l00,000 Tibetan antelopes in China at present. They are key state grade-A protected animals. Protecting Tibetan antelope has become a transprovincial, transdepartmental, and even transnational issue. It needs more attention and investment.
