埃德加·爱伦·坡的恐怖小说,在颓废、怪诞和阴郁中透出幻觉般深邃的美,引起了世人瞩目。这种恐怖效果的实现,一个主要途径就是大量恐怖意象的使用。这些意象与爱伦·坡自身的经历、个性气质以及当时的文坛主流有关,但都经过了爱伦·坡独具匠心的艺术创造。众多恐怖意象中,场景意象群、美女意象群、动物意象群占据了主要位置,对这三者的研究可以令读者深刻了解其恐怖小说的内涵和魅力。
Edgar Allan Poe＇s horror fictions are well-known for a profound beauty of decadence, grotesqueness and gloominess. In order to achieve horrible effects, Poe uses an important technique --the selection of numerous horrible images, which has much to do with Poe＇s experiences, idiosyncrasies and the literary mainstream of the time. But these images are all recreated by Poe＇s original art. The connotation and artistic charm of Poe＇s horror fictions can be deeply understood from three main groups of images, which are groups of scene image, groups of beauty image, and groups of animal image.
