Objective To translate the original English version of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) into a Chinese version, and evaluate the validity of the new version among TMD patients. Methods In order to develop a Chinese version of RDC/TMD, the original English version of RDC/TMD was translated, back-translated and acculturated. TMD patients aged above 18 were randomly selected and surveyed using the Chinese version of RDC/TMD. Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of RDC/TMD were tested. Results A total of 118 TMD patients were surveyed and examined clinically. Internal consistency test showed that the Cronbach's α coefficient of the Chinese version of RDC/TMD was 0.93 while the split-haft coefficient was 0.71, and the Cronbach's α coefficient of each sub-scale of RDC/TMD was Chronic pain 0.88, Depression 0.93, Limitation related to mandibular functioning 0.68, Nonspecific physical symptoms (pain items included) 0.86, Nonspecific physical symptoms (pain items excluded) 0.81. Validity analysis of the RDC/TMD showed that there was a significant logic correlation in the scale. Conclusions The Chinese version of RDC/TMD has been established successfully with good psychometric properties which provide the theoretical evidence for further application in Chinese TMD patients.
