Objective To investigate the effect of captopril on hypertrophic scars by establishing a hypertrophic scar model on the ventral side of rabbit ears. Methods 12 rabbits were divided into 4 groups (3 rabbits in each group): group A was experimental group(lOmg/ml captopril+ 2.5%CMC), group B was control group 1 (2.5%CMC), group C was control group 2, and group D was normal group. Full-thickness excisional wounds (1 cm in diameter) were made in the ears of group A, B and C (5 scars in each ear). 90 hypertrophic scars were made totally. The scars of the A, B, C groups were used topically with drugs from 21th to 28th days after operation, and then the samples were collected on the 28th day and analyzed. Results Compared with group B and C, group A appeared flatter, softer, and lighter scars in color. The scar elevation index (SEI) and the epidermal thickness index (ETI) decreased 34.1% and 41.5% (P〈0.05). The collagen density was also lower than that in group B and C (P〈0.05). There were no significant differences of those criteria between group B and group C (P〉0.05). Conclusion This study showed that topical application of captopril impregnated carboxymethyl cellulose gel reduced hypertrophic scar formation following dermal injuries in a rabbit ear.
